In the initial weeks following the implementation of the headscarf ban, Vienna's high schools recorded a significantly higher number of non-compliance cases than the city's middle schools, prompting official investigations into 53 persistent violations.
In the first two weeks of the school year, over a thousand girls in Vienna were found to be violating the new ban on headscarves in schools.
The majority removed the scarf on the first day or after being requested by teachers and principals. However, 53 cases where students refused to comply despite warnings are now being investigated by the Vienna Educational Directorate. The data shows that almost twice as many violations occurred in high schools (AHS) compared to middle schools (MS), despite the latter having a higher percentage of Muslim students.
The Directorate sent 34 invitations to parents of girls under 14 attending high school and 19 to parents of middle school students, indicating that the issue persists across different school levels. Officials from the Directorate suggest that the higher incidence in high schools may be due to the presence of older students who are legally allowed to wear scarves, potentially encouraging younger ones to resist the ban.
A specific protocol has been established for handling these cases, including sensitive discussions with families and the potential for fines if compliance is not achieved
