is an ongoing interview series that celebrates the best LGBTQ+ representation on screen. Each instalment showcases talent working on both sides of the camera, including queer creatives and allies to the community.Sometimes, less is more, and no other show captures that better thanDespite its teeny-tiny runtime, Brant Rotnem's TikTok creation includes more depth in sixty seconds than plenty of shows do in sixty whole minutes.
So we threw up the first season on Instagram first. It didn't quite go as we had anticipated. They'd recently made some changes to the algorithm that made the platform a little bit less favourable to new creators unless you're spending a lot of money on Instagram. One of the most surprising and beautiful by-products of releasing on TikTok is the direct dialogue you get to have with viewers. People are super-engaged through the comments.
"One of the most surprising byproducts of releasing on TikTok is the dialogue you have with viewers." So we kind of tried to ease people into it gently. For instance, our Instagram handle was @oneminutegaysoap, so people could see exactly what the show was right there. They're actually well-disguised longer scenes that would never make it, in their full length, into a standard feature film. So because we have all of these cuts, it enables us to have things unfold a little bit more, like a play over time, as well.We really wanted to be grabby with the first season. We wanted to hook people on some of the drama, on some of the wild twists and cliff-hangers – sort of the signature things the series is known for now.
The storyline about Shyanne and JB, although it does very closely resemble what's going on in the news right now, it actually came directly out of conversations that were happening after Caitlyn Jenner came out and publicly said that trans girls shouldn't play on girls' sports teams. So when we found the casting for Shyanne, we thought:"This is going to be perfect, because on the surface, they're talking about trans rights in sports, and, underneath, there's a lot more going on here too."
I think that's one of the problems we've seen in media through the years. You've seen a lot of queer and trans representation, but almost all of those characters, their identities are so wrapped up in their sexuality that you don't see them just trying to deal with job-related considerations, or living fully-realised lives that are about more than their sexuality themselves.I think that we wanted to take aim at some stereotypes, too.
