Here’s how homeless residents can vote in the November 2022 election
Not having a permanent home does not revoke anyone’s right to vote.
You must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old to be eligible, and many counties will require voters to provide a valid form of state ID or the last four digits of their Social Security number.does not affect voter eligibility in California. Anyone who is on parole, probation or in jail for a misdemeanor or awaiting trial can still register. The only restrictions are people currently serving a felony sentence in a county jail, state prison or federal prison.
If you want to receive election materials – including ballots and voter information packets – a “mailing address” must be listed. An address for a shelter, business, trusted friend or P.O. box can be listed, but unless an unhoused person is physically staying there, those locations cannot be used on their own to register.
Homeless advocate Shaunn Cartwright said most people she works with in the South Bay didn’t realize they still had the right. Cartwright thinks if more people knew that they can affect their situation by being involved, they would choose to participate in elections. Mark Wassberg is facing this predicament in Richmond, where he used to work years ago and is now running for mayor in the November election.
