In order to secure the role, “McCarthy will need 218 votes if all members-elect remain present and can only afford four GOP defections – and he's currently grappling with more than a dozen,” per.
“If McCarthy is unable to get enough votes on multiple ballots, the House could adjourn without a speaker,” which could lead to a plurality vote – but because this is so unprecedented, we don’t really know what’s going to happen. As of this writing, the attempted seven votes have resulted in a big fat pile of nothing.
