While no actual Nashville-based restaurant has opened an Indy-area location yet, hot chicken spots have been popping up over the past two months.

Nashville hot chicken — fried chicken marinated and covered in a cayenne pepper seasoning paste or sauce — originated in Black southern communities. The specialty was conceived when the girlfriend of Thornton Prince III, upset that he’d been out late, cooked him a breakfast of fried chicken with extra pepper.
Thornton, though, liked the dish and got together with his brothers to develop their own recipe, opening a restaurant in the mid-1930s.His Prince's Hot Chicken Shack and Bolton’s Spicy Chicken & Fish, each with a couple of locations, are the classic Nashville hot chicken restaurants. Newer to the scene is Hattie B’s Hot Chicken, which has nine restaurants in five states.
