Vaccination has been key in stopping the spread of the virus, the county says
Many feared another hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego County when public health officials warned of a small increase in cases, largely among those experiencing homelessness, in mid-February.
Hepatitis A is a viral illness that spreads through fecal contamination or through contaminated food or water. In most cases, symptoms such as nausea, stomach pain, fatigue and jaundice clear up within two months. But in some cases the virus can cause deadly liver damage. That’s certainly a different pattern from the one that developed in 2017 when an initial trickle of positive tests quickly grew, week after week, eventually reaching 584 cases, 398 hospitalizations and 20 deaths by the time the outbreak eventually resolved itself in 2018.
While recent vaccination efforts may have helped, it’s also the case that the population at risk of hepatitis A infection — generally those living without adequate access to sanitary services — is more vaccinated overall than it was in 2017, largely due to the long-running vaccination campaign that followed the outbreak.
