As the UK experiences its first real heatwave of the summer, many employees are left sweltering in their workplaces.
When does it become too hot to work? Regrettably, there is no specific maximum workplace temperature set by law in the UK that would automatically result in workers being sent home. However, under the Workplace Regulations 1992, employers are legally obliged to maintain reasonable working temperatures, which means they must provide a comfortable working environment.
Employers are required to comply with health and safety laws at work, which include maintaining a comfortable temperature and ensuring clean, fresh air. If employees find the workplace temperature uncomfortable, the Government advises them to "talk to their employer".
