It was extremely rare, they said, for an infant born so small to survive. His father could hold him in the palm of his hand.
Connor Florio, a few days old in July, next to his father's hand. By Cathy Free April 11 at 5:09 PM Baby Connor was born a tiny preemie in July, weighing just 11 ounces — about the size of a human heart and lighter than a can of soda.
On Tuesday, when Connor was discharged to go home with his parents, Jamie and John Florio, he weighed nearly 11 pounds — about 15 times his birth weight. To keep their spirits up during the nine months that their son was hospitalized, the Florios bought wee costumes for Connor at Build-a-Bear to celebrate every holiday and take photos.
"We're so happy to finally have him here, but it's more stressful now,” said John Florio, who is about to return to his job as a middle school social studies teacher after taking a week off to celebrate Connor's homecoming. Jamie Florio, a special-education teacher, is just now beginning her maternity leave.Jamie Florio is seen in a portrait with Connor, dressed as an elf for Christmas.
When their tiny son was delivered, though, John Florio had a strong hunch that he would ultimately be healthy and strong.
