Data from the 2022 Crime Survey for England and Wales showed that approximately one in 50 people aged 75-plus have been subjected to domestic abuse in the past year
When Grace Humphries*, 72, of west Wales, met her second husband online in her forties, she thought she had found a second shot at happiness. Her first husband had died suddenly a decade earlier, leaving her with two children.
“My children were very protective of me, and didn’t have a close relationship with Edward. They urged me to seek help, especially during my treatment, but I felt stuck and didn’t want to burden them. I felt very out of control and was afraid of any escalation or that he may extend the abuse to my friends or family.”
This increase is backed up by other findings. Recent police figures show crimes flagged as “domestic abuse” against all women have increased since 2017. But abuse of the over-60s has increased the most – up by 90 per cent.
