Dr. Daniel Hermann shows off a compression sock he wears, even when playing basketball at Moody Park on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 in Houston. Dr. Hermann found his own blood clot in his leg last year and had to get it removed, now he is on lifelong blood thinners and has to wear compression socks. When it comes to shooting hoops, Dr. Daniel Hermann is usually up for a game.
Hermann was with his wife and three children in Dallas to celebrate the New Year in January 2021, when he awoke at 2 a.m. due to discomfort in his leg. At first, Hermann thought basketball was to blame. Maybe he injured himself without realizing it.Hermann fell back asleep, but the next morning, the pain remained. While some might have dismissed the incident as muscle soreness, as a doctor, Hermann recognized the warning signs of deep vein thrombosis - pain, tenderness, swelling and redness.
“It’s a fairly effective way to deal with blood clots, and it can lead to rapid improvement of the symptoms,” Morkas said. “It can actually make you feel better in a day or two.”“The whole vein was full of the clot,” he said.A week later, Morkas performed a follow-up ultrasound. The swelling was beginning to return, and he wanted to assess if the clot had reformed.
It is not a decision the hematologist takes lightly. There are side effects; but in this scenario, the benefits outweigh the risks. In addition, if symptoms are accompanied by sharp chest pains or difficulty breathing, individuals need to go to the doctor right away. DVT can become most dangerous if the clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, creating a pulmonary embolism. “Then it can become lethal,” Hermann said.
