HBO Max's upcoming Constantine reboot show is reportedly almost finished with the scripts. as the studio has been getting a bulk of them. While John Constantine was a major player in the Arrowverse over the last few years, played by Matt Ryan, the Hellblazer is being reimagined over on HBO Max. Filmmaker J.J. Abrams and his production company Bad Robot are in the process of developing a Justice League Dark franchise, consisting of interconnected TV shows and movies.
One of the Justice League Dark shows that is in the works is Constantine, from Abrams and writer Guy Bolton. Unlike Ryan's Constantine, the reboot will follow a younger incarnation of the DC occult detective during his early years. The HBO Max drama will also reportedly feature a BIPOC actor as the new Constantine. While not confirmed by either Warner Bros. or HBO Max, British-Nigerian actor Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù is rumored to be a candidate for the DC role.
Aside from Constantine and Madame X, Abrams' Bad Robot is also producing the Zatanna solo-film, with Emerald Fennell penning the screenplay. There was also a Deadman project rumored to be in the works for HBO Max in 2021, but that has not been confirmed by the studio.
While not confirmed, it wouldn't be shocking if Constantine season 1 consists of anywhere between 8-13 episodes, which is what a lot of HBO Max shows go with these days. Since Constantine seems to be the first show that will kick off the Justice League Dark universe, the reboot will set the tone for the new franchise. Whether it will tease or even include other characters that will be part of the team remains to be seen.
