UCLA gymnast Ceina Alipio was determined to help her team despite a hand injury, learning a tougher beam routine to give the Bruins a boost.
For over 100 years, college athletes couldn’t make money competing in their sports. A new NCAA rule around name, image and likeness has changed that. The biggest winners? Gymnasts., who sat out her freshman season because of a torn Achilles, gave Alipio advice as she transitioned to college. Moving mats, cheering from the sidelines and just being vocal were some of the many ways to contribute.
“She’s done my hair for pretty much every single away meet. You have to make appointments with her,” Lee said. “I think the thing in the gym that she’s grown the most is being able to communicate and communicate what she needs and how she’s feeling. And again, just really trying to use those tools to be the best that she can be for our team,” McDonald said.
