Curt Schilling… Barry Bonds… Roger Clemens… They’re back! Who has the best shot — this time around — to get elected into the Hall of Fame by the new Contemporary Baseball Era Committee? jaysonst has more:
They’re all members of an eight-player ballot, down from 10 in previous Veterans Committee elections. And it will be fascinating to see if this committee views their candidacies any differently than the writers, who cast enough votes for all three to allow them to get within 40 votes of election — but left them all on the outside when their 10 years on that ballot ran out in January.
Dwight Evans got 50 percent of the Modern Era Committee member votes two years ago. He’s not on this ballot. Lou Whitaker got six votes in that election. He’s also missing. Why? He just fits the profile of players who get the support of groups like this: A two-time home run champ who played 19 years. … Popular teammate everywhere he went. … Would have reached 500 homers if not for the strike of 1994. … It all seems perfect for this committee. You can just feel the love building in the room for a guy like this.He missed by 16 votes in the 2021 writers election, then basically announced he’d rather be elected by a committee like this anyhow.
Maybe this committee will surprise us and be more willing to overlook those performance-enhancing drugs cloud than the writers were. But what’s more likely is that the ex-players on this committee will want no part of sharing the podium with Bonds and Clemens anytime soon on a July afternoon in Cooperstown.I’m a fan of Hall candidates with spectacular peaks, and that’s the case with both of these 1980s/90s icons. But that hasn’t matched the recent voting history of these committees.
