George Washington University has a new moniker: “Revolutionaries” The school discontinued the use of its “Colonials” moniker last June after it drew criticism from students for its association with colonialism.
George Washington decided to rename its moniker on June 15, 2022, citing “the need to unify the community.”“The board recognizes the significance of changing the university’s moniker, and we made this decision only after a thoughtful and deliberate process that followed the renaming framework and special committee recommendation that considered the varying perspectives of our students, faculty, staff, alumni and athletics community,” Board Chair Grace Speights said in a statement last June.
The school then underwent a year-long process to choose a new moniker, sifting through 47,000 points of feedback, it said. Through focus groups, random sample surveys and community-wide opportunities to rate moniker options and merchandise distribution, Revolutionaries was the top-ranked option. The school joins a number of collegiate and professional organizations that have changed their monikers in recent years.
