We spoke to RealGDT about the Mexican idea of death that inspired his pinocchiomovie, what makes David Bradley the perfect Geppetto, and the status of his relationship with Netflix:
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio may be retelling a familiar story, but it does so in an unexpected way. Not only are the strangely vivid creatures of the stop-motion animated film a far cry from what fans of the Disney classic might expect, but the movie's narrative calls back to a dark period in Italy's history and ties the political concept of fascism to the more domestic troubles of fatherhood.
Guillermo del Toro: It was really important for me to understand a very Mexican idea that death is what articulates our life; the fact that we are limited by it. And though we seldom think about it, it actually doesn't shy away from the fact that we all are going to get there. A great poem by Jaime Sabines [called 'Del Mito'] says, “All my life I heard a voice whispering softly in my ears. Live. Live. Live. It was Death.
Guillermo del Toro: I have worked with David Bradley on Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, and I worked with him on The Strain. He was one of the main characters in both. I know his versatility, and I love his voice. I love that he can be this sort of disturbing [man], yet warm and sweet. He is a Shakespearean-trained actor; he has all the modulation, and he can make you feel how Geppetto is imperfect.
