That’s four straight Ws for the Guards!
BALTIMORE -- Shane Beiber likes the Orioles. It’s understandable if they don’t feel the same about him.
Bieber retired 17 of the first 19 Orioles he faced. Anthony Santander and Ryan Mountcastle were the only baserunners as they drew walks in a three-batter span in the first and second inning. Two plays in the outfield helped create the no-hit vibe. Oscar Mercado robbed Ryan Montcastle with a diving catch to end fourth in right center field. Left fielder Ernie Clement started the fifth with a nice catch of Adley Rutschman’s drive toward the line after long run.“Trey earned it,” said Bieber. “It was 107 mph coming off the bat, but it looked like 120.”
“It was a quick up and in for Eli,” said Francona. “That’s not the easiest thing to do, but he’s done a real good job. We’re trying to figure out where guys fit. Sometimes it’s a little challenging.” Bieber allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings. In his last two starts, he’s struck out 16 and allowed three earned runs in 15 innings. He threw more sliders than fastballs Friday, and they both showed an increase in velocity, according to Baseball Savant data.
