Liverpool Everyman Theatre showcases a new play that explores themes of poverty and disability
Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse Theatre showcases a radical hip hop production which gathers the voices of young disabled and neurodivergent artists.
"She didn’t get the support that she needed from primary school right through to university. Everyone goes through education, through primary school and high school, but not everyone gets the same experience and benefit from that. The piece explores how the lack of easy access to the basic right to education has a disabling effect on people like Maisy and her character Kaite.
"I want people to walk away feeling empowered. If someone personally relates to the show I want them to feel that they've got complete ownership and confidence in who they are and what their disability is and how to go around the world and interact, don't be apologetic. Maisy added: "That's easy to identify. This is happening, it's not this person, it's the people who aren't doing enough to support that person.
The play is directed by Keith Saha the Artistic Director of 20 Stories High, he said: "The skill and energy of the team involved and the stories that are being told promise to make for an unforgettable night out.” Leanne Jones co-CEO/Executive Director, 20 Stories High added: "We talk about the social model of disability as opposed to the medical model. From the off, Keith and Jenny were clear this cannot feel in any way like a pity play. It's about creating awareness, it's about empowerment."
