You may not have known it, but Illinois' 1% grocery tax was suspended for the past year. That's set to change on July 1, when the grocery tax will go back into effect, as will a gas tax increase.

Officials said the extension was predicted to save taxpayers upwards to $400 million through the fiscal year.

Sign up for the weeklyThe tax was suspended for 12 months on items that included “food for human consumption that is to be consumed off the premises where it is sold.” Alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, candy and food prepared for immediate consumption were not included in the grocery tax suspension.According to the Illinois Department of Revenue, for a grocery bill of $145.29, a 1% tax would add $1.45.
