'I found it to be much stranger and spikier and more urgent than I had remembered it because the question of authorship, ownership, women, art, money, and ambition is all on the surface in the book.'

multiple times when you were younger and then again several years later. What resonated with you the most during those early readings and then again as an adult? When I was reading the book as a child, I loved the March sisters. I wanted to live inside the book and the March sister I felt most connected to was Jo.

One thing when I read the book when I was an adult, is that I realized number one, I completely blocked out the fact that Jo stops writing. That was not my experience with the book. In the book, Jo says that she stopped writing, gets married and has kids, opens the school, and doesn't write anymore. I didn't remember that because what I remembered was Jo the writer.

I unconsciously knew that whoever Jo was the avatar for had written the book. When I was an adult and read it, I realized, "Oh my God, this is different than I thought.

What's going to happen is nothing. I feel like that tragedy of not having anywhere to put that talent is something I wanted to explore even with Beth, who is often relegated to being a saint slated for death. I wanted her to be epically ambitious, to be playing Bach and Brahms. I didn't want her to feel like she was inevitably not going to achieve her dreams. What I loved about them was how grand they were in what they wanted and how honest they were about what they wanted.
