Activists from Animal Rising arrived at the racecourse before 10am and several later breached the security cordon around the track
One reportedly tried to glue themselves to the second fence of the race and several appeared to handcuff themselves to the outside of the Canal Turn.
The organisers were forced to delay the start and the horses did not even leave the paddock until after 5.15pm, when the race was scheduled to start. Animal Rising said that the two horses who had already died at Aintree this week and the injuries sustained by the fallers in the National were proof that their cause remains an important one.
