Grace United Methodist Church in Harrisburg has become a “Reconciling Congregation,” one of a growing group of churches to officially apologize for its treatment of the LGBTQ+ community.

Wayne Bender, who serves as the church’s historian, proudly details Grace’s history and boasts it was known as the Savior of the Capitol. After the state capitol burned to the ground, Grace’s congregation led efforts to keep the state capitol in Harrisburg and end the campaign to return it to Philadelphia, opening its massive doors to both the senate and house of representatives.
