High wind warnings, flood watches and emergency proclamations are in place as an ominous winter storm touches down in the Bay Area.
A ruthless winter storm bore down on the Bay Area and Northern California Wednesday, prompting emergency proclamations, school closures and multiple hazard warnings of potential flooding, debris flows and severe winds.
Across the Bay Area, widespread flooding and damaging winds were expected to last from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday. For the third time in a little more than a week, all of that rain was fed by a potent atmospheric river — a swell of tropical moisture in the atmosphere moving across the Pacific.
“This is the warm front,” Garcia added. “It was supposed to start this morning. It did — it’s going to continue through much of the a.m. hours and South Bay and southward may get a little break this afternoon, maybe even on the East Bay you might get a short little break this afternoon before the cold front [or] Pineapple Express really kind of bears down.”
“Once we get past the early afternoon, into the mid-to-late afternoon as that cold front comes in, that’s when everything kind of goes from what we’re seeing this morning and levels up,” Garcia said. “We’re going to get heavier rains and more intense wind gusts.” PG&E said they had almost 2,900 workers ready Wednesday to restore power and to respond to emergencies. At 10:30 a.m., 5,320 Bay Area customers were without power, according to the utility. Of those, 2,422 were in the East Bay, 1,984 were in the South Bay, 639 were in the North Bay, 243 were in San Francisco and 32 were in the Peninsula.
“San Jose is taking this extra precautionary step during this storm surge to protect our residents, particularly our most vulnerable unhoused neighbors,” Mayor Matt Mahan said in a release. “We want to make sure all residents are informed and prepared to stay safe, and that city staff has the ability to move quickly to relocate encampments that are in harm’s way.”
