Police said 'multiple silverware items of significant value and a quantity of cash stolen'
Burglars left a trail of destruction after smashing their way into an historic church to steal silverware and cash.
Lancashire Police said offenders gained to St Mary’s Church in Goosnargh by damaging a stained-glass window. Once inside they forced their way into a back office and drilled out two lock safes. They stole 'multiple silverware items of significant value and a quantity of cash' and also damaged the church's CCTV system. The incident at the building on Church Lane, which dates from the Middle Ages, happened between 5pm on Monday Monday and 9am on Tuesday .Officers are now appealing for witnesses and information. They are urging people to get in touch if they were in Goosnargh and the surrounding area and noticed anything suspicious between Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning.
A force spokesperson added: "The burglary is being linked with several similar offences at churches in other parts of the country and we ask for vigilance around church buildings and for security measures to be reviewed."
