In an email to San Francisco Bay Area Google employees this week, Google Real Estate and Workplace Services VP David Radcliffe said the company was relaxing some of the health and safety measures it enacted to protect employees from COVID, CNBC and The New York Times reported.
A majority of Google’s staff is still working remotely. But Googlers with roles that did not allow them to work-from-home were required to wear masks in office and be tested on a weekly basis. Amid declining coronavirus cases, the moves are likely in preparation for Google’s launch of a hybrid work schedule for its employees. Unlike other tech companies that have given employees an option to stay remote, Google has committed to a return to office.
In a pre-pandemic world, Google was able to lure employees to the company with its many perks, including free catered meals in the cafeteria, access to an on-site fitness center, massages and free rides on commuter shuttles. Those perks have now returned for employees. In the U.S., Google has not yet made a decision on when it would mandate all its staff to return to office. The company did say about 30% of its employees in the Bay Area accessed an office last week. Globally, Google is allowing regional management to decide when to allow employees back to the office....
