I’ve been writing about technology for two decades and am routinely struck by how the sector swings from startling innovation to persistent repetitiveness. My areas of specialty are wearable tech, cameras, home entertainment and mobile technology. I also work as an actor, enjoying equally the first Mission Impossible movie, a season at Shakespeare’s Globe and a part in the fourth series of The Crown. I’ve written for the Daily Telegraph, the Sunday Times, the Daily Mail, the Sun, Metro, Stuff, T

When Google, or Apple or Samsung, announce their flagship phones, it’s the Pro or Ultra models that get most of the attention. After all, they have the best hardware. But that doesn’t mean the more affordable model lacks its charms and, let’s face it, the lower price point means the regular phone will likely end up as the big seller.Google’s latest models are the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Google’s design has settled into a classy, easily recognizable shape that looks and feels good, and the Pixel 8 is the best version yet.The smaller size isn’t that different, and the benefit mentioned above of a better fit in smaller hands is worth the trade-off. The display is flat instead of curved this time, which is the same with the Pixel 8 Pro. This could have made the phone less comfy to hold, but it doesn’t. After all, your hand wraps more round the back than the display.

There’s also Best Take, which is great for group shots, swapping faces from different takes to get to one where nobody is blinking. This worked fine, but I found it less enjoyable than Magic Editor—sometimes those wacky faces make for a better result. Google’s cameras have consistently been strong and these are the best yet, though the Pro has more, of course, and if photography is key to your smartphone use, you could go for the Pro. But even so, this is pretty good. This is one of the big upticks Google has been telling us about: the move to the Google Tensor 3 processor. It makes a lot of things possible. For a start, it makes Face Unlock much more useful. Face Unlock has been on earlier Pixels but it’s been absent.
