Much leaked and rumored, the next Pixel phones from Google have now been announced. They are more affordable versions of the current Pixel 3, but with some key differences
Today in Mountain View, California, Google launched its 2019 Google I/O Developer Conference with an in-depth keynote. Among the most exciting of the announcements were two new Google Pixel smartphones. The current phones, Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL, have now been joined by two more, both more affordable. While it’s often hard to get excited by mid-range phones, Google is doing something different here that’s well worth a look.
The 3a XL’s display stops some way short of the edges both at the top and bottom. From the front, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a look very similar, though the 3a is noticeably bigger. From the back, the phones carry through the same industrial design Pixel phones are known for: shiny panel towards the top, a more satin finish for the rest of the case. A single camera sits top left, with a flash, and the fingerprint sensor is centrally placed directly above the G for Google logo.
The front-facing speaker on the Pixel 3 and its XL sibling is absent from the new phones, with the speaker having shifted to two neat slots on the bottom edge. I think this looks better.Choose from the 5.6in display on the 3a and a 6in version on the 3a XL. These compare to the 5.5in and 6.3in screens on the earlier versions, in other words, these two are sized between the models released last year.
It would have been easy for Google to have made this adjustment but it hasn’t. Both the new phones have OLED screens The only change that has been made is that both have FHD+ resolution where last year’s XL model had QHD+.The Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL in Clearly White with the Pixel camera. The Pixel camera has been a real highlight on recent Google phones, managing with one lens what most cameras can only deliver with several. The 12MP camera is in place on both the new phones.
To know just how these cameras perform will take more time, but the inclusion of the tremendous rear Pixel 3 camera is a great start. The camera plays a part in a new feature launching today on Pixel phones, which puts AR into Google Maps, showing large arrows floating in the air superimposed on the imagery the camera sees. I've only tried this briefly but it looks super-cool and works well. Not much.
