Google’s fines inadvertently make a good case for tougher antitrust curbs. rob_cyran

The European Commission has fined Alphabet unit Google 1.49 billion euros for abusive practices in online advertising. This is the third fine Europe has leveled against the American internet company in less than two years. The commission said Google’s AdSense platform acted anti-competitively by preventing clients from using other services to place ads on web pages, and later placing restrictions on where search ads from rivals were placed on web pages and how the ads appeared.

Last year the commission imposed a 4.3 billion euro fine for Google’s actions with its Android operating system. It said Google’s requirement that handset makers pre-install the Google Search app and its Chrome browser as a condition for licensing Google’s app store was anti-competitive. In 2017, European regulators fined Google 2.4 billion euros for hindering rivals of its online shopping service.
