The Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Google data acquired by investigators is admissible in a 2020 arson that killed five people.DENVER — The Colorado Supreme Court ruled on Monday that data from a Google search warrant, used to arrest three teens in connection with the Green Valley Ranch house fire that killed a family of five in 2020, is be admissible.
The majority found that"law enforcement obtained and executed the warrant in good faith and the evidence shouldn't be suppressed under exclusionary rule," according to the opinion issued by the court. Justice William Hood III delivered the opinion of the court with Chief Justice Brian Boatright, as well as Justices Richard Gabriel and Melissa Hart. Justice Maria Berkenkotter concurred in the judgment, and Justices Monica Marquez and Carlos Samour Jr. dissented.of the warrant, which used a Google reverse-keyword search to identify the three teens as suspects in the arson.
The suspects are accused of taking part in setting fire to a Green Valley Ranch home in the early morning hours on Aug. 5, 2020. Five members of a family were killed in the fire. The suspects were arrested in January 2021.
