Varvaro, who had a six-year career in the majors, was on his way to for the New York 9/11 memorial ceremony in lower Manhattan.

Varvaro, a relief pitcher, appears in 166 games for the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners from 2010 to 2015. He had a 7-9 record and a 3.23 ERA in 183.2 innings. His best year was 2013 when he compiled a 3-1 record and 2.82 earned run average. Injuries cut short his career and in 2016 he began training for the Port Authority Police Department.
