“The aim is to radiate that summer look – the colour of your hair that you get when you’ve been on holiday,” she says. “I play with colours to make her hair glow, mainly focusing around her face and the front of the hairline.” While many colourists use the face-framing “money piece” technique, where just the front two strands are lightened, glow lights are the softer, cooler alternative to this more traditional method.
On blondes, the key to getting it right is to ensure there are enough darker colours through the hair, so that adequate dimension and contrast can be created to make glow lights pop. “It’s often about putting beige, goldy tones next to a shade that’s slightly ashier,” says colourist , who is also a fan of the glow lights technique. “It creates an amazing illumination, which is instantly very youthful. It makes hair sparkle.”You don’t have to be Kate Moss blonde to reap the benefits of this trend, either. Nicola Clarke has also used the technique on darker brunettes like actor Emilia Clarke. On Emilia, she adds glow lights to tiny strands of hair , to add a little twinkle to her natural hair tone.
On textured hair types, it’s all about deciphering which curls are best to pick up the light: “We might scatter some glow lights on ends and around the face at certain points where the light hits the hairline,” says Irwin. “It’s a trend that absolutely works for everyone.” Another great thing about glow lights is that they require very little upkeep. “You could have them as little as three to four times a year, and simply get a gloss every six to eight weeks to keep hair looking consistently good and youthful,” says Clarke. “Healthy hair reflects light and shines, and glosses give you that in no time.” At
