One car-free zone by a primary school was branded an “utter disaster” with two “near misses” in recent weeks.
Greater enforcement of car bans outside Glasgow primary schools is needed, councillors have said, as one warned of fears over children’s safety.
Bailie Kavanagh, who represents the Cardonald ward, said the “harsh reality” was the programme had been an “utter disaster” at Our Lady of the Rosary. “The police have commented on it, that it is not workable,” he added. “I’ve had two near misses in the past six weeks. Cllr Elaine McSporran, SNP, who also represents Cardonald, said she agreed with Bailie Kavanagh “somewhat” but added “parents are the issue”. “The actual car-free zone does work when people adhere to it and we are working with police.”
A pilot is being launched in the Drumchapel/Anniesland ward where school staff, councillors, police and council officials will work together to discuss the best approach to enforcement. During the pilot, council staff will also work with parents to encourage “behavioural change” towards sustainable travel options.
She asked whether the council had considered approaching the Scottish Government over automatic number plate recognition. But he said the problem was they would have to be removed within three to four months. He confirmed the council was lobbying the Scottish Government over number plate recognition.
