Campaigners are calling on Glasgow City Council to declare a homeless emergency due to the number of people in temporary accommodation in the city including thousands of children.

Over 6,500 homeless people are stuck in temporary accommodation Glasgow - with 2,624 of them children.

The figures released by Glasgow City Council, under freedom of information rules, are up to the start of September. Last month, national figures released by Shelter Scotland revealed that 9585 children across the country had officially been declared homeless. The STO’s Sean Clerkin said: “We are beyond the tipping point in Glasgow. With homeless people stuck in squalid and substandard temporary accommodation, their physical and mental health are disintegrating in such conditions. In the run-up to Christmas, we are effectively saying there is no room at the inn.”

Edinburgh declared a housing emergency nine days ago. It cited record homelessness figures, a severe shortage of social rented homes and spiralling private rental costs.
