The recordings were released by Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, the first lady’s former friend who recently published a tell-all book about their friendship.
Wolkoff made of her phone calls with Trump in July 2018, which she shared with CNN, Trump appeared to largely share her husband’s views on immigration, insisting child asylum seekers were worse off before they were placed in U.S. detention centers, pointing to President Obama’s treatment of immigrants and insisting immigrants should come to the U.S. legally.
“Give me a f—-ing break,” Trump said in one phone call of the Trump administration’s 2018 policy of separating children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border, insisting that while she tried to reunite them, they “didn’t have a chance” because “they need to go through the process and through the law.”
