Undefeated San Diego welterweight to face Mexico's Julio Luna on card also featuring Navarrete vs. Baez
Santillan, the Mira Mesa native who trains and instructs at The BXNG Club in East Village, will face Mexican fighter Julio Luna on Aug. 20 in a 10-round co-main feature taking place at Pechanga Arena.
Santillan made his Pechanga debut last October and had the old joint on Sports Arena Boulevard rocking with a 10-round decision over Angel Ruiz in which he displayed improved footwork, excellent conditioning and a series of sharp uppercut, hook and straight left combinations against an aggressive opponent.
Luna, a 24-year old righty from Durango, Mexico, has won five straight bouts, including a 10-round decision over Jafel Peralas on May 14. A win over Santillan would be a major early career booster while Santillan has to see the fight as another stepping stone. Said former two-time welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, who called the fight for ESPN: “If Gio wants to skip the line, he needed to get a stoppage like that in a fight like that. He’s showing the progress we want to see.”
