GILROY – Authorities on Wednesday announced arrests in two separate fatal hit-and-run collisions involving pedestrians this week in Gilroy.was reported Monday around 8:55 p.m. near Wren Avenue and El Cerrito Way, according to the Gilroy Police Department. The adult male victim died of his injuries at the scene.
Police said the driver, identified as 54-year-old Gilroy resident Derek Shingu, turned himself in Wednesday morning. Shingu was booked into Santa Clara County jail on charges of hit-and-run resulting in death or injury and vehicular manslaughter. The second collision was reported around 5:35 p.m. Tuesday near 1st Street and Wren Avenue, according to police. A 92-year-old man who was riding a mobility scooter was found unconscious in the roadway. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said a 16-year-old boy was identified as a suspect through witness statements and the city’s Flock Safety camera system. He was arrested and booked into juvenile hall on charges of hit-and-run resulting in death or injury and vehicular manslaughter. Suspect vehicles in both collisions were seized and will be inspected and processed for evidence, according to police.
