For residents and tourists alike, Google Maps Street View is an exceptionally useful navigational tool. However, not every country has welcomedto their streets. One of these longtime holdouts, Germany, has only recently begun to change its tune after more than a decade of resistance. 91 years ago, the Reichstag Fire Decree set into motion a decade of terror in Germany and beyond, and laid the foundation for a particularly strong privacy stance in Germany that has lasted into the 21st century. This street near the Stasi Museum in Berlin was mapped in July 2022. Somewhat ironically, the actual street the museum is on has not been mapped despite being in a relatively busy part of Berlin. German regulations — and a lack of historical data — prevent users from jumping through time on Google Street View like they can in many other areas around the world. Germany is also requiring that images be deleted from Street View after 13 years.
