There is increasing support for a so-called mosque tax in Germany to stem the tide of foreign funding for Islamic institutions that could come from anti-democratic sources

.

The federal government sees it as"a possible path," according to an answer to a parliamentary questionIt would be similar to the country's Christian"church tax." There is growing concern about the influence foreign funding sources are having on the country's Muslim community. Germany is home to an estimated 5 million Muslims.

For example, the Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institute for Religion operates around 900 mosques in Germany. It is run by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government and the imams are paid by the Turkish government.Welt am Sonntag said several German states back the move, saying that German mosques should be able to finance themselves.
