His victory brings an end to one of the most controversial political campaigns in recent memory, which saw two parties – including the incumbent Labour – abandon their candidates over comments on the Middle East.
In 2012, he stepped down to become Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner, but returned to replace suspended Labour MP Simon Danczuk in the Rochdale constituency at the 2017 election. Sir Tony died from leukemia on January 17, aged 73.
