British women's doubles pair make it to Wimbledon quarter-finals for first time since 1983
Murray and American Townsend were beaten 6-4 3-6 6-3 by Marcelo Arevalo and Marta Kostyuk in the second round.battled through to the quarter-finals with a 6-4 3-6 6-2 victory over 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez and Koolhof.
The British pair had taken a comfortable first-set lead but struggled to get going in the second and agonisingly missed out on a deciding-set tie-break in front of a partisan crowd.Five years ago Watson reached the women's doubles quarter-finals with German partner Tatjana Maria, but the last time Britain had a women's doubles partnership in the quarter-finals was with Jo Durie and Anne Hobbs in 1983.
Wildcards Bains and Lumsden, both 25, had already caused an upset in the first round, defeating 11th seeds Anna Danilina and Xu Yifan before downing Magda Linette and Bernarda Pera, two players who were seeded in the singles draw, in two hours and 36 minutes. Top men's seeds Skupski and Koolhof, who are yet to win a Grand Slam together, beat Australian pair Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler 7-6 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals.
