The Rothera Research Station, used by the British Antarctic Survey’s (BAS), was the unlikely venue for Eric Bourne and Stephen Carpenter’s chilly wedding. The couple was the first same-sex couple to get married in the British Antarctic Territory.
Two crew members of a UK research vessel have become the first ever same-sex couple to get married in the British Antarctic Territory.
The pair were together for 20 years before tying the knot in sunny conditions, allaying fears that their big day might have to be delayed by the weather. The couple, who were married by the ship’s captain Will Whatley, have travelled the world with each other on a variety of ships but both have a soft spot for Antarctica.
His new husband added: ‘We’re both very proud to be the first same-sex marriage to happen in British Antarctic Territory.
