Calling Hugh Scott the “worst of the worst,” a Lake County, Ind. judge sentenced him to 103.5 years Tuesday in girlfriend Davita Ward’s 2018 death.
Ward was found shot dead on June 17, 2018, inside a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix that had been torched on 2400 block of Noble Street in Gary, charges alleged. At the time of her death, documents alleged Ward had been in a volatile and abusive relationship with Scott. At one point, she wrote in Facebook messages to Scott she was afraid of him and he was “crazy.”
At sentencing, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kasey Dafoe said Scott had a “fairly significant” criminal history with 28 criminal arrests — and 10 misdemeanor and eight felony convictions. No witnesses pointed to his involvement, Scott added, only prosecutors and Lake County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigation Division Cmdr. Michael Stewart, the lead detective. Investigators took Facebook messages out of context, Scott said.
