Last month, Ivan Provorov faced backlash when he opted not to participate in warmup during Flyer's Pride Night, citing his religious beliefs as the reason. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman was asked about the controversy during All-Star festivities:

send the wrong message about inclusivity in the sport to young players and fans, Bettman told reporters that “some people are more comfortable embracing themselves in causes than others.”“You know what our goals, our values and our intentions are across the league, whether it’s at the league level or at the club level,” Bettman said.

“But we also have to respect some individual choice,” he added. “And part of being diverse and welcoming is understanding those differences.” Last month, the Flyers faced backlash over their Pride Night celebration when Provorov opted not to participate in warmups, citing his religious beliefs as the reason for not joining his teammates who were wearing rainbow-colored jerseys as part of the annual Pride game at Wells Fargo Center. Coach John Tortorella defended Provorov’s decision at the time, saying the defenseman “did nothing wrong.”

“Whether you choose to embrace and make a statement on behalf of a cause affirmatively, if you choose not to do that, doesn’t necessarily make you a bigot,” Bettman said Saturday. “I’m sure you don’t endorse every single charity that solicits you, and you don’t participate in every social cause. You pick and choose the ones that are important to you. The ones you don’t choose to do don’t necessarily make you bigoted, misogynistic or homophobic or racist.

At the time of the Provorov incident, Bettman said “when you look at all of our players and the commitments that they’ve made to social causes and making our game welcoming and inclusive, let’s focus on the 700 that embrace it and not one or two that may have some issues for their own personal reasons.”
