Fellner\u0027s quest for beautiful, hardy, disease\u002Dresistant plants has left a legacy of lilies for Prairie gardeners to enjoy for years to come.
Fred Fellner, a generous, humble, soft-spoken man and renowned lily hybridizer passed away in Vermillion, AB, on June 11, 2022, at age 90.
Fellner worked exclusively with Asiatic lilies. He explains that Asiatics were chosen for practical reasons. Trumpet lilies were not hardy enough for his region and he felt that the martagons took too long from seed to bloom. He assessed his seedlings in their third year and moved those that merited a second look to selected plots to grow on for another three years. From these plots, selections were made for lilies to use in further breeding or selections of cultivars for registration and sale. Thus, the development of new cultivars could take from six to 12 years. Fellner looked for high bud count, disease resistance and hardiness in his lilies.
