Andy Burnham has led a surge of angry responses from among Labour politicians across Greater Manchester after reports emerged that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has decided to axe the Manchester leg of HS2.
"How can this be right? How can this be justified given that's it's almost ten years since George Osborne came to this city and said 'you are going to get it all'? HS2 or HS3 as he called it at the time, platforms 15 and 16 at Piccadilly. You name it, we were going to get it. And then Boris comes five years after that and says in front of Stephenson's rocket we're gonna ....
He urged the Conservatives to come clean about their plan to 'end this shambles'. "We at least deserve a hearing. We at least deserve a conversation about how we see things. We wrote to the prime minister last week to say we're always open to a conversation. We're reasonable people. We understand there could be different ways of doing things."
She added: "The message is clear. The offer of a conversation is still there. The government, the prime minister and ministers need to reach out to us and have those conversations because we won't be prepared to sit back time and time again and hear promise after promise where ultimately it's our residents at the receiving end and our residents who are being let down."
