The Rhinos' 50-0 defeat to Wigan Warriors was the latest reality check for a club that has failed to build a new era of success.
If there is anyone within the four walls of Headingley who still stands by the notion that everything is in order at Leeds Rhinos, you'd have to argue that they're in denial about the club's shortcomings at this point.
There are people within the four walls of Headingley who scoff at the suggestion Leeds Rhinos are a million miles away from being one of Super League's powerhouse teams. Maybe they genuinely believe that, but it's delusional if they do. Or perhaps, they are simply unable to recognise the pretty glaring shortcomings that are wildly apparent to everyone else. Leeds are years behind the likes of Wigan and St Helens.
As far as transitional seasons go, it's not been a bad one. Underwhelming? For sure. Disastrous? No. A number of players have improved considerably over the season and Leeds now have a young pack that has the potential to kick on and become one of the competition's best in years to come. Young additions, particularly Leon Ruan, have shown promising signs. James McDonnell has been an excellent addition.
What's concerning for Leeds now is the fact that they do have a lot of salary cap space to work with now, their recruiting has, to this point, failed to address some obvious holes. Matt Frawley should be given the benefit of the doubt but Leeds still need another halfback regardless, with both Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer departing.
