Interesting Engineering spoke to one of the authors of a new paper, Professor Jim Smith, and asked him if the fears around the release of wastewater are unfounded.
The release of this wastewater, which has been treated to remove most of the radioactive elements, has not been without controversy. China was quick to implement a ban on all Japanese seafood, and protests broke out in Seoul, South Korea, questioning the ethical, financial, and health implications of the release of wastewater.
About 25 fish were tested and no detectable tritium levels were found. However, more sensitive methods may be deployed to test tritium levels. To make their point, the authors refer to the La Hague nuclear facility in France, which annually discharges 10,000 terabecquerels of tritium into the English Channel, which is about 450 times the 22 terabecquerels of tritium Fukushima will release. A terabecquerel is one trillion becquerels of radioactivity and is used to measure radioactivity.
“The other radionuclides are potentially more radiotoxic than tritium and can biomagnify,” explained Professor Smith. “But they are at such low levels that radiation doses will be insignificant. For example, the predicted dose to seafood consumers in the area from all radionuclides in the release is about 2000 times less than the radiation dose we all get from natural radioactivity in the environment.
