An electricity grid operator asks people to reduce their use of power through Christmas morning because low temperatures have increased demand for electricity.

Continuing frigid temperatures and increased demand for electricity prompted the request to ensure adequate power supply,“We have some unprecedented things going on across the grid today and we’re having some difficulties,” said Susan Buehler, PJM’s chief communications officer. “The extreme and prolonged frigid weather has resulted both in additional demand for electricity and more generator outages due to the inability to operate in freezing weather. There is a real risk of rolling black outs.
Postponing use of major electric appliances such as stoves, dishwashers and clothes dryers until other times.PJM is monitoring the power supply conditions and will do everything possible to keep power flowing in the region, the company said.
