Melissa Giller, a spokeswoman for The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute in Simi Valley, talks about the leaders’ enduring friendship
Reagan once said it wasn’t just the common language both the United States and Britain shared that bound them together, but also the countries’ similar values and morals.Upon her passing, the team at the Reagan Library created a special display depicting Queen Elizabeth and her friendship and working relationship with the president.
The Reagans first met the Royals in June 1982 at Windsor Castle, the royal residence in the English county of Berkshire. In his autobiography he talks about a lot of different perks that come with being a U.S. president. About 10 months later, the royals were scheduled for a 10-day West Coast trip on their yacht HYM Britannia when the Los Angeles area was hit with torrential rains and they weren’t able to bring the yacht into port.
“But because of the poor visibility and muddy conditions they were unable to go horseback riding,” Giller said. “The seven-mile drive up to the ranch, on a very winding road, was very hard and when they finally got there President Reagan said to the Queen, ‘Oh I’m so sorry’ and she laughed and said ‘Why are you sorry, this was an adventure.’”
