Dame Vanessa Redgrave, Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Emma Thompson amongst the list of actors lending their name to Save historic theatre
A letter calling for Oldham Coliseum to reopen and be restored as a producing house has been signed by a number of actors, artists and community leaders. Dame Vanessa Redgrave, Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Emma Thompson are just some of the high profile names who have added their signature to the note which was published in The Stage, a theatre publication, last week.
READ MORE: The exciting new plans for Oldham's Coliseum company - just five months after venue was forced to closeA public meeting at the theatre in February organised by the performance union Equity saw 400 people turn out to support the Oldham venue – with Maxine Peake, Julie Hesmondhalgh and Christopher Biggins, amongst others, voicing support for it to be kept open.
A second report was also commissioned to examine the physical condition of the Fairbottom Street building – which is owned by Oldham council and had been leased to the Coliseum. While the building had been deemed 'beyond its expected lifespan' and a survey in January uncovered ‘numerous’ urgent health safety works, it said most of the defects were ‘relatively minor maintenance issues’, and affirmed its potential for an immediate reopening at a capital cost of £150,000.
Those behind the letter say that in response to these developments, a fresh call has been made for a positive conversation between local campaigners, artists, Oldham Council, Oldham Coliseum Theatre Ltd, and various funding bodies. They say the objective is to 'preserve' and 'revitalise' the auditorium, extending it to include an expanded foyer, backstage area, and café-bar space while creating studios and rehearsal spaces suitable for the next 138 years.
