Centrist MPs and those from the far-right National Rally had both tabled motions of no confidence in the government. The centrist group's vote did not succeed, with 278 MPs voting in favour - narrowly short of the 287 needed to get the motion through. The second less well-supported motion - scheduled for this evening - is not expected to succeed, as other opposition parties have already said they will not vote for it.
